About Mrs. Rooney
Mary Rooney is thrilled to be a returning 2nd Grade teacher at YACS. Originally from Mechanicsburg PA, Mary now is proud to call New Orleans her home. She has also lived and worked as a teacher in Baltimore and New York City before relocating to New Orleans in 2010. Mary has earned an Associates Degree in Fine Arts form the Delaware College of Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition to being a teacher, Mary is also a painter. Her abstract paintings are bight and colorful and are inspired by nature, patterns, and abstract expressionism. Her classroom is named after her favorite painter, Henri Matisse. Mary takes advantage of her background in the arts to design academically rigorous arts integrated projects that connect to the Common Core standards. She became a teacher because she saw first hand the lack of art education in schools and she wanted to be a part of that change. Mary believes that the arts can be used as a powerful tool to engage students in deeper learning experiences and create life long learning habits. Outside of school Mary enjoys painting in her studio, collecting plants, jogging around her neighborhood, and visiting museums and galleries. |
