In November the 2nd grade building was transformed into a gallery exhibiting the major events of the War of 1812 though artwork. Each classroom door was decorated to represent a key location from the War of 1812. The Mississippi River guided visitors from the Chalmette Battle Field to the Port of New Orleans. Across the hallway was the burning White House where Dolly Madison famously rescued the portrait painting of George Washington and a door decorated to represent the Baltimore Harbor where the Start Spangled Banner was written.
Learners in Mrs. Rooney's class created journals from the perspective of important figures from the time. After reading about each important figure, learners chose a figure that they wanted to learn more about and then wrote journal entries as if they were that person experiencing the important events of the war.

Below are images documenting the journal writing process and art making experience. Learners enjoyed "aging" their journal pages by staining the paper with tea.
