In just two days we will begin the second half of the school year! I'm looking forward to reuniting with my amazing creative learners (I missed you guys) on Tuesday and kicking off 2015 with some amazing projects and performances. Speaking of performances, we are working with the talented actor, director, writer, and producer, Terence Rosemore. Terence is the real deal, and when he's not making movies in Hollywood, he's teaching our 2nd graders about filmmaking in connection to our language arts curriculum. Below is our first video, inspired by Drew Brees and his rowdy pre game chants. Let's get pumped for a new year of learning and growing at YACS!
On Wednesday we went on a swamp adventure to the Barataria Preserve at Jean Lafitte National Park. The trip was sponsored by PBS Kids as a component of the science program we piloted called Plum Landing. We had an awesome time hiking around the swamp and spotting various swamp critters such as armadillos, alligators, birds, and deer. Creative learners also got the opportunity to dissect owl pellets and go dipnetting to discover what kinds of creatures live in the swamp waters.
Here is a sneak peak at some pictures from the trip. More to come! Over the past few weeks we have been piloting a PBS Kids science program called Plum Landing. Here are some pictures from an outdoor activity called Biodiversity Bingo. Students investigated the environment around our school and found a diverse group of organisms living in our own backyard!

We started the day with a scavenger hunt in the sculpture garden and then we got a tour of the museum. Our docents took us on a tour of the 7 continents as we roamed the museum looking at art from ancient civilizations from around the world. Our second grade learners made quite an impression with their curiosity and enthusiasm for talking about art. After exploring the museum, we enjoyed the warm weather with a picnic in the park. A big shout out to our chaperones for helping the day run smoothly!
